How to become a yoga instructor

Are you thinking about how to become a Yoga instructor? Joining us at PYC Academy  promises to help you on your journey by providing a network of expert support. You will also  be positively challenged by in-depth Yoga exploration and asana practice.  Here are a few things you should be aware of before embarking on your way to becoming a  Yoga instructor.

What qualifications do you need to be an instructor?

As it stands, there are no necessary qualifications required by law to become a Yoga  instructor. This means there are no “˜governing bodies’ for Yoga. With that being said, there  are various Yoga Teacher Associations that self-regulate the Yoga industry to ensure the  highest quality of teaching is maintained. The biggest Yoga accrediting associations to know  about include:

– Yoga Alliance
– The British Wheel of Yoga
– Independent Yoga Network

PYC Academy meets the rigorous requirements of Yoga Alliance US and has done for over  13 years. As a prerequisite to take on our teaching training course, you will need a minimum  of 2 years of asana practice. You must also have a sincere passion for Yoga knowledge and  have a desire to teach.  Aside from the qualifications, it’s important to think about the personal attributes required to  be a Yoga instructor too. For example, are you a peoples person? Do you have the capacity  to motivate and inspire people to be better versions of themselves?

How long does it take to become a yoga instructor?

The length of time it takes you to become a qualified Yoga instructor can range between 100  to 500 hours of training. It is all dependent on which Yoga Teacher Association your training  is accredited by.  In line with the requirements of Yoga Alliance US, those who choose to train with us at PYC  Academy will undergo 200 hour Yoga teacher training courses. Our courses run over 5 long  weekends, perfect for those who have weekday commitments and prefer the weekend  flexibility.

Once your training is complete, you can register as a 200hr Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT)  and begin your meaningful work as a Yoga instructor.  If you choose to, you can also branch into further intensive training, such as yin and yoga  therapy. All of which can count towards RYT Continuing Education requirements or as a  YACEP towards advanced certification.
